However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One day he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw nothing here threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
